Sarah McCarthy

Sarah McCarthy began working in the mental health field in 2018 after graduating with her bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2018 from The College of William and Mary. She started her career with the Middle Peninsula-Northern Neck Community Services Board providing behavioral support and wrap-around care to youth and families of the area. After graduating with her Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The College of William and Mary in 2022, Sarah began working for Chesapeake Counseling Associates, PC. 

Sarah is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC # 0701013135). She provides trauma-informed care to people of all ages; however, she specializes in providing services to those ages 5 to 25. Sarah has experience providing therapy in multiple settings including individual, group, telehealth, in-home, and in-school. Sarah supports those who are struggling with stress, anxiety, trauma, depression, ADHD, substance abuse, self-esteem, and more. 

Sarah focuses on utilizing therapeutic approaches that meet clients’ needs including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), all of which are evidenced based. In a collaborative fashion, Sarah works with clients to create achievable and realistic goals for the therapeutic process. Sarah believes in the power of the therapeutic relationship and focuses on building rapport to ensure clients feel a sense of safety, understanding, and support throughout their therapeutic journey.
