Gottman Method of Couples Therapy

The Gottman Method of Couples Therapy provides couples with effective strategies to enhance their relationships. The process begins with a thorough relationship assessment, which evaluates key areas related to happiness and relationship longevity. Your therapist will then tailor the therapy to address the specific challenges identified. Sessions will involve structured exercises to help both partners learn new skills and resolve issues efficiently.

Two Parts of Gottman Therapy:

Part 1: Relationship Assessment
The assessment consists of four sessions:

  • Session 1: In the first session, the therapist gathers a history of the relationship and introduces the Gottman Method. Both partners will complete an online assessment measuring various aspects of relationship well-being, which will be analyzed by the therapist to inform the treatment plan.

  • Sessions 2 & 3: The therapist meets with each partner individually to collect their personal histories and insights.

  • Session 4: The therapist and the couple reconvene to discuss the assessment results. During this meeting, the therapist will present a recommended treatment plan and introduce initial skills training and exercises.

Part 2: Couples Therapy
Following the assessment, couples start the therapy phase. The frequency and duration of sessions can be adjusted based on the couple's goals and identified areas for improvement.

Therapy sessions are structured, solution-oriented, and skills-based. Couples receive handouts and participate in exercises designed for effective results. Many couples experience an immediate increase in closeness while gaining practical skills they can apply after therapy ends.

Couples often find the experience so beneficial that they return for “refresher” sessions at six, twelve, and eighteen months after regular therapy concludes.
